Entrepreneurs Dress for Success

May 10, 2009

jeans2To many people, the way an Executive Entrepreneur looks at work sends a message about the company and reflects on the individual’s choices.  If you’re an entrepreneur in a traditional industry such as banking, insurance, etc., wearing something more traditional is perhaps exactly the right choice.  If you’re running a technology business in Seattle, the traditional business suit may be less important.  However, I meet many entrepreneurs locally who think grunge is in style and it looks like they are wearing whatever was laying on their closet floor when they get up in the morning.  But do you have investors or other partners that you meet?  What impression is it leaving those individuals if they stop by your offices?  Though you may just be creating a product that is sold only over the internet and you will never actually meet a customer, are your dress choices really appropriate?

Before buying or choosing something to wear, you may want to ask yourself these questions:

  • Is this appropriate for the kind of job I have (like, am I a CEO, right?)?
  • Are these clothes a fad or will they hold up as a basic fashion idea for two or more seasons?
  • Can I afford it?
  • Does it fit properly?
  • Is it comfortable?
  • Is it the right thing to wear this season, in this climate?
  • Is the fabric of really good quality?

If you’re having trouble answering these questions, you may also want to seek some advice.  Try “what not to wear” on The Learning Channel or ask someone in your office.  Don’t choose just anyone sitting near you, select a person who has a good eye, dresses well himself or herself, and is generally regarded by everyone as someone with excellent taste.  Grab a fashion magazine or consult a fashion director or personal shopper.  Nordstrom usually has some good folks who can help you…and though they are nice, you don’t have to go for the Joseph Abboud!jabboud

Your clothes need not be expensive, but with the right selections, they may look expensive.  If you are making the transition from entrepreneur to executive, dress becomes even more important.  Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression.  To act the part, you must also look the part.  You want to be an Executive Entrepreneur?  Then show it.
