Online Ad Prices Dropping; Help Needed to Monetize 750,000 users

July 18, 2008

PubMatic posted its AdPrice Index showing that overall, online advertising CPMs are dropping with social networks at the bottom.  Small web sites showed the largest drop and by vertical, news and gaming had significant drops.  Entertainment showed the only increase.  It takes about 2.8 billion pageviews to generate $1MM in advertising revenue, based on the average CPM of $0.36.  Think about the scale required to generate that kind of income!

With free as the new black on the web, it will be difficult for new advertising only business models to gain market traction and funding.  If you’re starting a new internet business, think about other ways to monetize your audience and offer value that people are willing to pay for using their credit card.

Speaking of ideas to monetize an audience, Darren Herman of Media Kitchen is looking for a partner to help him monetize his audience of 750,000 unique monthly visitors.  It’s no wonder.  Even at 100 pageviews per month, that’s only 75MM pageviews, which at $0.36 CPM, could be bringing in roughly $27k/mo.  You can respond to his challenge here.
